METAGEO TM is a new way to host, analyze and share map, 3D scan and other types of visual data. It takes large datasets, and turns them into small bits, and streams them to desktop, mobile, and AR/VR platforms. Do you work with map data and create / manage: vectors (points, paths, poly), rasters (orthomosaics, Digital Surface Models (DSM), Digital Terrain Models (DTM), point clouds (lidar and photogrammetry), or 3D models? METAGEO loads the data into a cloud platform, and streams the data to…

Photogrammetry: Making Measurable 2D and 3D Data From Images

Photogrammetry, is also known by a few different terms including: Reality Capture, Structure From Motion (SFM) and/or Digital Twin creation. It is the science and practice of using photos (images) to create 3 dimensional quantitative models from real life. It is used in many industries that deal with measurements such as architecture, engineering and construction, but it also is used to tell stories, such as in motion pictures, video games, and now Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR / VR). Photogrammetry works through utilizing parallax,…

Three Aerial Imagery Sources: The What and When

There are three main aerial imagery sources. The modality depends on the coverage area, and required resolution: Satellite (Global), Crewed Aircraft (county, 3,000+ acres), and Drone: Fixed Wing (neighborhood, 100-3,000 acres) and Multirotor (1-100 acres). Satellite has the highest frequency of data collection and covers the greatest area, but is the least resolute. Crewed Aircraft flies at 1,000 feet to 10,000 feet and can carry big (expensive), upwards-of-500MP sensor arrays. Drones are the most resolute and least-expensive-to-deploy solutions. While it's possible to put a…

North Complex Fire: Drone Damage Assessment

North Complex Fire: Drone Damage Assessment The North Complex Fire was part of thousands of wildfires that were sparked from a combination of warmer than usual temperatures, and a lightening storm that ripped through Northern California. The fires were geographically broken up as several different complexes, which required a large scale response from Federal, State and Local agencies to fight the millions of affected acres, and forced people to flee from their homes to escape the flames. Paul Spaur, of the Spaur Group, in…

Drone Work is More Than Playing with Toys.

A drone is much like a hammer, or a paint brush. It's a tool with which you can create. The majority of the drone work that I do, doesn't consist of flying drones, in fact it only makes up a small amount of it. What I really do, is help businesses utilize 3D scanning, imaging and mapping to improve processes, efficiency, safety, and save money. This is done through the use of many tools, and includes data from survey equipment, scanners, airplanes, drones, satellites,…

New blog, company and website!

Change is in the air! I've now run the gamut from working in academia, joining a fast and successful startup, and the slow and ready fortune 100 company. Now it's time for me to go off and do something on my own. With the knowledge and contacts that I've procured over the last 7 years, I'm ready to help companies realize their full potential in the drone / geospatial world. This blog will be the place where I start telling some of the stories…
